A beautiful spot like Kaya Mawa by Green Safaris isn’t only sought after for its stunning beach views, bespoke African interiors, top class food or barefoot feels – Likoma Island is teeming with incredible culture.

This month there has been some excitement on the Kaya Mawa beach front where guests have not only been spoilt by unbeatable sunsets but true hospitality by what can only be described by Likoma Island locals who, in line with where we are, have the “Warm Heart of Africa” at their core.

It started off with some of the island boys demonstrating their Malipenga dance to the beat of a drum. The Malipenga dance is a long-time celebrated tradition in the Malawian culture from the Tonga speaking people. This dance was said to have originated from imitating military drills.

Then, the guests at Kaya Mawa were also graced with the presence of the Limbani band. This is a local band of Likoma Island which, without fail, gets guests up singing and dancing carefree on the beach.

The St Mark’s choir also joined in one day with a perfect performance, lighting up the beach with their beautiful singing and dancing.

The weather is perfect at the moment on the island at this time of year for swimming and enjoying the sunshine. With this and the upcoming festive season in mind, Kaya Mawa is offering an amazing “Pay for 3 nights, stay for 4” last minute rate.
