A movie based on a true story that played out in Malawi is set to be released in 2018.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is set to be released in 2018. It tells the true story of William Kamkwamba, a young Malawian boy who built a wind turbine for his village.
In the past, successful and popular films lead to an increase in tourism for the country they were filmed in. New Zealand saw a substantial increase in destination tourism after The Lord of the Rings films were released. Closer to home, Uganda had a thriving tourism industry during the period around the filming and release of films such as “African Queen”, and gained a small boost following peace and the release of “The Last King of Scotland”. Movies often inspire people to travel, and spark a desire to see where certain films were set.
Nobody is claiming ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’ will be anywhere near as successful as The Lord of the Rings, or produce the vast increase in tourism that was seen in New Zealand. However, Malawi is fast growing a reputation, and is becoming more frequently mentioned as a top destination, both in Africa and globally. Coupled with the movie, Malawi should see a spike in the tourism industry as a result.
