The Tongole Foundation – the charity arm of Tongole Wilderness Retreat in the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve – is using technology to improve the learning capacity of children from neighbouring Chankhokwe Primary School.
The Tongole Foundation has partnered with British organisation, One Billion, to initiate the One Tab project at Chankhokwe Primary School, which is located in a rural community within the Nkhotakota District, Central Malawi. The project’s goal is to promote reading and numeracy among 180 learners in Standards 2 and 3 through a simple software package offered in the local Chichewa language.
The tablets were recently distributed to the learners who received them with great excitement and curiosity as, for many of them, this was the first time using such technology. The intention is for the tablets to captivate the concentration, interest and imagination of the learners, which will in turn help them to learn, retain and build onto the necessary knowledge and skills. If successful, the project will be extended to other standards and schools in the area.
Last year, a team of international volunteers brought smiles to the learners and staff at Chankhokwe Primary when they gave the school a full make-over. The renovations included repairing, decorating and furnishing all the classrooms with new desks. What’s more, the school had a solar powered geyser system installed along with a computer and printer to enable teachers from Chankhokwe and neighbouring schools to type and print out examination papers.
If you are interested in a responsible safari, Tongole Wilderness Retreat offers the socially-conscious traveller a way to contribute to local community empowerment through volunteering at or donating to schools like Chankhokwe Primary.
